Training Schools
There are two Forest Schools in Kerala at Walayar and Arippa. The Forest School, Walayar
(Palakkad district) was set up in 1961, and that in Arippa (Kollam district) was started in 1981. The Schools impart training to forest department personnel. Arippa school provide training to forest guards only. The course duration of forest guards is six months and foresters one year. There is only marginal difference in the course content of forest guards and foresters. But more emphasis is given on depth of the course content in the case of foresters. They have also a wider field training programme than that of forest guards. The intake capacity of forest guards and foresters in Walayar is 35 and 30 respectively. The accommodation capacity of Arippa School is 40 in each batch.
The Principal of Walayar school is a Deputy Conservator of Forests and that of Arippa is an Asst. Conservator of Forests. There are 4 instructors at Walayar and three in
Arippa.
